Áine Rose Rafferty
Dr Rafferty is a General Practitioner (GP) and Medical Educator. Her knowledge and experience stems from the breadth of specialties she has worked in throughout her medical career, ranging from surgical disciplines such as urology and bariatric surgery, to hospital and community based medical fields.
Her relentless desire to have greater impact on patient care has led to the acquisition of numerous postgraduate qualifications. For her Master’s in Clinical Education she conducted research in medical simulation training for doctors, akin to flight simulator for pilots, and she aims to publish this work soon. Through her role in medical education Dr Rafferty has spearheaded key projects in hospitals in Northern Ireland and has been instrumental to the education of hundreds of medical doctors. She has utilised social media and online virtual platforms to educate patients and doctors. Under Dr Rafferty’s leadership, in August 2022, her medical education team gained international recognition and received a prestigious ‘Exceptional Educator’ prize. Dr Rafferty serves her community through her clinical role in the GP out-of-hours, which includes the delivery of emergency care to terminally ill patients. Here she is also a trainer for GP trainees, which provides her with yet another privileged position from which to positively influence the next generation of doctors. In her spare time Áine is a passionate cook, particularly enjoying cooking with whole foods and home-grown produce. She relishes taking on new challenges and this year it involves competing in her first triathlon. She is looking forward to the BioInnovate programme and working with driven, like-minded individuals, all looking for clinical needs-based solutions.
