Cormac Smith
Cormac is an accomplished technical and innovative engineer, with 20 years’ experience across numerous engineering roles in the Medical Device Industry in Galway. He holds a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from University College Dublin and a Master of Science in Polymer and Process Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast. He has developed strong technical expertise in medical device design, process development, and manufacturing through his experience in the medtech industry. His role prior to joining the Bioinnovate Programme was as a Research & Development Engineer with Merit Medical Ireland, where he led teams in the design and development of advanced guidewire products.
In this role, he has delivered complex product portfolios from concept through to commercialisation, regularly presenting to senior leadership and driving projects through key design control and regulatory milestones, including EU MDR and FDA submissions. He collaborates closely with clinical, marketing, and physician stakeholders to ensure products meet real-world clinical needs. Prior to this, he worked with Cambus Medical as a Process Development Engineer, leading the implementation of new manufacturing technologies and managing supplier relationships and production line setup. He has extensive experience in process validation, leadership, and applying Lean Six Sigma methodologies to improve quality and efficiency. Earlier in his career, he held roles with Boston Scientific, VistaMed, and Creganna, focusing on product transfer, validation, and manufacturing optimisation. He combines technical depth with practical manufacturing expertise, supported by training in Six Sigma (Green Belt), Lean methodologies, and process validation.
