Dr. Peter J. Carr is an internationally recognised clinician, researcher, and educator specialising in vascular access and infusion therapy at the University of Galway. As Associate Professor and Principal Investigator of the Vascular Access and Infusion Therapy Research Group, Dr. Carr leads a multidisciplinary team advancing digital technologies, clinical trials, and the evaluation of next-generation vascular and infusion devices to improve patient outcomes across cancer, critical care, and general medicine.

Dr. Carr’s expertise is widely acknowledged through leadership roles such as Ireland’s representative on the GloVANet-WoCoVA global committee and as a key member of the AVATAR group, where he completed his PhD with the world’s most cited vascular access research alliance. He has contributed to pivotal international guidelines, including the ERPIUP consensus on venous access, and is lead author of a Cochrane review on vascular access specialist teams. His research is cited in numerous clinical guidelines and is shaping global best practices for vascular access device selection, insertion, and maintenance.

A passionate educator, Dr. Carr directs a postgraduate emergency care programme and several micro-credentials in vascular access, developing innovative simulation and digital learning initiatives. He is a strong advocate for clinical academic appointments in nursing science and supervises multiple PhD students and post-doctoral scholars. Dr. Carr regularly delivers workshops and training worldwide, collaborating with industry and academic partners in Europe, Australia, Canada, and Brazil to drive evidence-based improvements in vascular access care.

Dr. Carr is also deeply engaged with the medical technology sector, serving as a clinical advisor and research collaborator with Flomatrix and Vein Tech—two leading companies dedicated to advancing vascular access technologies.
