Founded in 2011 and based at the University of Galway, BioInnovate is a world-leading health technology innovation hub that brings together clinicians, engineers, scientists, and business professionals to improve patient care through needs-led innovation.

What We Do
BioInnovate supports innovation through three key pillars:
The BioInnovate Programme
Our flagship 10-month full-time fellowship in medical device and digital health innovation, based on the Stanford Biodesign process. Participants receive a tax-free scholarship of €38,000, with programme fees covered.
Industry & Executive Training
Tailored programmes for professionals working in healthcare, MedTech, and related industries who want to build innovation capability within their organisations.
The Ian Quinn Centre for Health Technology Innovation
A new national innovation hub at the University of Galway, providing space, mentorship, and connections for start-ups, researchers, and industry partners driving the future of health technology.
Our Impact
Since its launch in 2011, BioInnovate has helped to shape Ireland’s health technology landscape. The programme has supported the creation of more than 30 new health technology start-ups, which together have raised over €300 million in follow-on funding.
Through its education and mentoring initiatives, BioInnovate has trained hundreds of innovators who are now leading change across MedTech, digital health, and research sectors both in Ireland and internationally.
This work has strengthened Ireland’s position as one of the world’s top five MedTech hubs and continues to drive meaningful advancements in healthcare innovation worldwide.

Ian Quinn Centre for Health Technology Innovation
The University of Galway, Ian Quinn Centre for Health Technology Innovation was officially launched in May 2024. The centre is named in honour of the late Ian Quinn who was central in establishing Galway as a global MedTech hub and played a pivotal role in the foundation of BioInnovate.
