Barry McCannHaving graduated from NUI Galway in 2003 with an honours degree in Commerce, Barry gained extensive commercial and fundraising experience within the sports, not-for-profit and healthcare sectors. He upskilled throughout his working career with certified diplomas in online marketing and project management. Following 8 years as fundraising manager for regional charities, Barry held a senior management role on the commercial team of the 2016 PRO12 champions Connacht Rugby. Building strong, genuine relationships was key to Barry’s success in growing commercial partnerships and developing new income streams. Now he aims to transfer these skills to the BioInnovate Fellowship. Barry is passionate about health technology and has a flair for problem solving. He is excited to be taking part in BioInnovate and hopes to marry his commercial experience with the skills of the multi-disciplinary team to truly embrace the biodesign process and emerge with a patient-centred, value-added solution that can make a difference to global healthcare. In his spare time, Barry enjoys long distance swimming, running and being entertained by his two young children.

Yuqi ShaughnessyYuqi has over 7 years R&D experience in experiment design, modelling, chemical synthesis, characterisation and rapid prototyping. Yuqi qualified as a Biomaterial Scientist from University of Limerick, specialising in bone repair and bone implant, nanotechnology and microscopy. She disseminated over fifteen publications including journal papers and national and international conference papers and presentations. She was also a member of a leading physics group in Ireland – Modelling, Stimulation and Innovative Characterisation (MOSAIC) and carried out research work for BioElectricSurface FP7 with €1m investment from European Commission. Yuqi previously completed her MSc in Biomedical Science from NUI Galway where she accumulated solid knowledge in cardiology, tissue engineering and bone disease and treatments. Yuqi also worked as a Design Engineer in a world leading medical device company- Creganna Medical (TE) and previous R&D Engineer in other multinational companies. She has obtained extensive experience in minimally invasive devices from concept design phase to manufacturing, project management and customer relationship. In addition, Yuqi received a Diploma in Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations from Institute of Commercial Management, UK and a Diploma in International Trade and e-Commerce from Institute of International Trade of Ireland. With good understanding of the Chinese Market, Yuqi was appointed as a VEC tutor for [Business Trading with China] course. Yuqi also has strong interests in Veterinary and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Yuqi is passionate about transferring her knowledge to commercialisation through the Bioinnovate Programme. In her spare time Yuqi likes music, swimming, skating and hiking.

Brendan StauntonBrendan is a graduate of the BSc in Neuroscience from University College Dublin and is currently completing his executive MBA from the UCD Michael Smurfit Business School. For the past number of years he has worked as a Clinical Specialist for Fannin Healthcare. During his time at Fannin, Brendan specialised in the areas of Radiology and Oncology and worked closely with patients and hospital staff to provide the best possible clinical outcomes. Prior to this, Brendan was a European Product Manager for IonOptix, an American life sciences company. IonOptix are market leaders in the field of Cardiomyocyte imaging systems and he was responsible for new business development and expansion into the European market. Brendan has always been interested in the crossover between technology and science and is excited to have the opportunity to complete the BioInnovate Fellowship programme. He hopes to combine his science background and commercial experience to develop new novel solutions for currently unmet clinical needs. In his spare time Brendan enjoys Gaelic football, rugby and surfing.
