Adrian RutledgeA dual qualified medical practitioner, with engineering technical background and business acumen. Adrian is a recent medical graduate of University College Dublin. Prior to studying medicine he completed a degree in electronic engineering at Dublin City University and subsequently pursued a masters degree in Management of Technology and Innovation from the Dublin Institute of Technology. Adrian took the decision to return to education and retrain for his medical degree following 5 years working as an engineer for a large multinational technology leader where he worked on delivering novel applications in wireless sensors and actuators technology. He brings a proven track history in engineering R&D with recent crossover in medical and surgical disciplines where he has presented both clinical and engineering research at local and international conferences. Adrian enjoys applying his engineering hat to medicine, hanging up his multimeter in place for his stethoscope. He has a passion for innovation and finding solutions to challenging complex problems. He is particularly interested in developing new approaches and technologies in the area of surgical innovation, robotics, tele-medicine and wearable medical devices. In his spare time enjoys car restoration projects and participating in triathlon events.

 

Alison Liddy

Alison is a both a qualified Chemist and Engineer. Having graduated with an honours Chemistry degree in 2003, she went on to pursue a Masters in Biochemical Engineering. During her studies, she completed research internships in both the US. and Germany. Following her Masters, Alison went on to work in the Roche Diagnostics R&D department in Penzberg, Germany that specialised in the purification of bio-therapeutics.

It was this interest that motivated her to complete a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering on Multifunctional Chromatography Supports. She subsequently worked in Boston Scientific's R&D department in Galway, investigating new surface coatings for drug-eluting products.

Alison then joined Cook Medical in Limerick, where she was team lead on gastroenterology projects from design to manufacture of commercial products. She is the named inventor on eight US patent filings and she has presented her research work at international scientific conferences.

Currently, Alison is working on an Enterprise Ireland commercialisation fund at NUI Galway, developing a new technology for the treatment of Orofacial pain.


 

John EarlyJohn Early has considerable experience in the medical device industry and has held a number of management and director positions. He has worked for both indigenous and multinational medtech companies over the past twenty years. John started his medtech career with United States Surgical Corporation and was instrumental in establishing the company’s surgical stapling and minimally invasive technology in Ireland, Iceland, South Africa and UK. Following the acquisition of USSC by Covidien John oversaw the commercialisation and management of Covidien’s portfolio in the Irish Market. He then headed up the internationalization of Covidien’s neurosurgical and spinal business with responsibility for all markets outside of the United States.John was managing director for Oceana Therapeutics Inc., a start up company specialising in licensing, sales, marketing and channel management of niche technologies in the gastrointestinal and pediatric spaces. More recently John was VP sales and marketing for Trulife, an Irish manufacturing and marketing company operating internationally.John has a degree in Applied Sciences from DIT and a number of postgraduate qualifications including diplomas in Strategic management and International marketing from the Irish Management Institute

 

John ThompsonJohn has extensive experience as a senior medical manager within the pharmaceutical industry. He has spent the last five years working for the global market leader Pfizer, where he was European medical affairs lead for the gastroenterology portfolio. In this role he oversaw the commercialisation and regulatory submission of late stage pipeline assets. 

John graduated with honours in Biochemistry and Medicine from Trinity College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons respectively. He has also completed post graduate qualifications in pharmaceutical medicine and an MBA from the Smurfit School of Business in Dublin. After completing his undergraduate training, John commenced specialist training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care medicine receiving a Primary Fellowship and Membership of the College of Anaesthetists Ireland (MCAI). John has also carried out medical research in Ireland and in the University of California at Berkeley. John hopes to leverage these diverse experiences as a Fellow and strongly believes that "No problem can be solved by the same kind of thinking that created it."

Fionn LahartFionn is a design engineer and project manager with extensive experience in medical device development and product design. Having graduated with an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from DIT (2005), Fionn spent his early career designing services for the health care sector and lecturing in both D.I.T. and I.T. Tallaght. On completing an MSc Physical Sciences in Medicine from Trinity College (2008), where he worked under Prof. Richard Reilly to develop a stroke rehabilitation system, Fionn worked as a design engineer in Melbourne, Australia. Fionn returned to Ireland in 2010 where he took up a role with AltaScience Ltd., a medical device R&D company based in Citywest Dublin. At AltaScience Ltd, Fionn was involved with all aspects of medical device development and has experience in leading a multidisciplinary team of engineers, quality and regulatory personnel to bring products to market through concept, prototyping, verification, manufacturing, regulatory and clinical phases. Fionn is a member of Engineers Ireland and has been on the committee of the Biomedical Division of Engineers Ireland since 2011. In his spare time he enjoys playing guitar, designing custom guitars, travelling and playing tennis

 

Annette KentAnnette has over 18 years’ Pharmaceutical industry experience across a range of sectors including clinical research, distribution, training and medical affairs.  Having graduated from University College Dublin (UCD) with an honours degree in Science, she subsequently completed her PhD from UCD in cardiovascular pharmacology.  She commenced her career in clinical research when she joined ICON Plc and subsequently Smith Kline Beecham. Annette broadened her technical ability and developed strong commercial awareness during her time with United Drug Plc where she was responsible for the technical and quality aspects of their pharmaceutical wholesaling and distribution businesses.  Prior to joining Amgen in 2005, she ran Scope Educational Services, a small Irish training company who provided training to healthcare professionals. In Amgen, Annette held Senior Medical Affairs roles, setting up the Medical Affairs function and establishing a clinical trials presence in Ireland across a number of therapeutic areas.  Since early 2015, she has been the Project Manager for the European Commission, FP7 funded NILVAD Alzheimer’s trial in Trinity College Dublin.  Annette is looking forward to the joining the BioInnovate program and embracing her passion for bringing the right option to the right patient, leading to better outcomes.  In her spare time Annette enjoys the outdoors with her family and also enjoys cycling and reading. 

 

Christoph HennerspergerChristoph graduated from TU München in 2011 with a Diploma (MSc) in Electrical Engineering and information technology. He then joined Curefab GmbH, a start-up in the field of 3D ultrasound imaging and started a PhD in the field of domain-specific modeling for freehand vascular ultrasound at the chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures (CAMP), supervised by Prof. Nassir Navab. His background in electrical and biomedical engineering as well as computer science with a focus on computer vision in medical applications forms the basis for his clinical research interests and strong network with medical experts of various disciplines. Christoph's major research interests lie in interventional and diagnostic imaging, physical modeling in medicine, the development of medical devices as well as clinically-driven innovation in the medical field in general. Throughout his professional career, he has contributed significantly to various research and industrial projects so far, both on a national and international basis. Among these is a spin-off for the detection of arterial stenosis by implantable pressure sensors, which has already shown a successful proof-of-concept and underwent pre-seed financing. He further refined his innovative thinking with a system aiming at the robotically-aided compensation of brain shift in neurosurgery, for which he won the B.E.S.T innovative mind competition in 2014, supported by IRCAD, France. Christoph is the author of various peer-reviewed publications and holds multiple patent applications in the field of medical technology and its applications. In his spare time, he enjoys photography, mountain climbing and general outdoor activities.
